Gyeongju, the host city of the upcoming APEC summit, is now in its final stages of preparation to welcome leaders from around the world.

As part of these efforts, a preview event titled “A Feast of Lights” illuminated the night sky over Bomun Tourist Complex yesterday, showcasing the beauty of Gyeongju’s evening landscape.

Reporter Nam Hyo-joo has the story.

A massive egg sculpture, inspired by the founding myth of Silla’s first king, Bak Hyeokgeose, has appeared at the lakeside plaza of the Bomun Tourist Complex.

The outer walls of the structure serve as a media façade, displaying vibrant visuals representing “The Golden Kingdom, Gyeongju,” while inside, the traditional flowers of Silla bloom endlessly in digital form.

This art installation was created to commemorate the APEC Summit Week, which will take place in Gyeongju in just over ten days.

The piece embodies the themes of connection, innovation, and prosperity, and is composed of metallic structures and LED panels symbolizing the 21 member economies of APEC.

“This work conveys the wish that the glory of Silla — the shining golden kingdom — will once again be revived in Gyeongju through this APEC summit.”

The Yukbuchon Complex, Korea’s first modern international conference center, has been transformed into a massive “Plaza of Light,” blending the city’s ancient heritage with cutting-edge technology.

On the walls of Yukbuchon, a digital rendition of the legend of the Big Dipper — the “Stars of Gyeongju” — is projected, while a large bell-shaped installation made up of 2,025 interlocking rings symbolizes the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok and captures the elegance of traditional Korean aesthetics.

The main roads around Bomun Tourist Complex, which will serve as major routes for APEC delegates, have also been newly illuminated.

“We aimed to recreate the splendid culture of Silla’s millennium and the beauty of its ancient nights. Ahead of APEC, we’ll continue our efforts to elevate Gyeongju as a truly global city.”

The “Feast of Lights” will light up Gyeongju’s nights every evening at 7 p.m. throughout the APEC summit, welcoming both international delegates and visitors.
